Theme: Prohibition Era Fashion
Prohibition-era fashion, popular in the 1920s, was characterized by bold, modern styles that broke away from traditional norms. Women embraced the flapper look, with loose, straight-cut dresses that featured drop waists, shorter hemlines, and often embellished with fringe, beads, or sequins. Bobbed hair and cloche hats became iconic, symbolizing a newfound freedom and rebellion. Accessories like long strands of pearls and cigarette holders were common, reflecting a more daring, glamorous lifestyle. Men wore sharp, tailored suits with wide lapels, often paired with high-waisted trousers, vests, and pocket squares. Fedoras, bowler hats, and polished leather shoes were essential accessories. Gangster fashion was particularly striking during prohibition - Chicago and New York flaunted gold chains & cufflinks while England's Peaky Blinders rocked tweed and flat caps. Prohibition-era fashion reflected a sense of social liberation, embracing both sophistication and risk, influenced by the rise of jazz, speakeasies, and culture change. For inspiration, search #NoirSlam on Instagram or 1920's fashion on Pinterest. Please remember: we celebrate diversity, body positivity, self-expression and creativity. Incorporate your own unique style into your look, let us know if you have any questions, and don't be afraid to get weird.
Models:
Please arrive dressed in your unique interpretation of the theme and be ready to shoot. Additional wardrobe will be available on location for models to incorporate into their look by FashionNess Wear. CEO Vanessa Thompson will be on-hand to help style. We'll have a private space designated for models on the top floor of the River City Queen for changing and model's belongings, including a pop-up changing tent for privacy. Please bring hangers for any extra items. We're still working on having an MUA(s) onsite for volunteer styling during arrivals - please let us know if you're interested in volunteering or know someone who is, in exchange for free tickets and promotion. Check in, visit wardrobe, explore the space for inspiring portrait locations, get familiar with Nanlite lighting, and meet other creatives before introductions begin at 3pm. Katy Karns, owner of Glow Studio, is opening her photography studio (a three minute walk from the River City Queen) for participants during the slam and will be offering a tour of her space at 2:40pm. Please consider early February weather and be prepared to work with many different photographers in quick 10 minute sessions.

Photographers:
We appreciate it when photographers & videographers dress in sync with the vibe and rock the theme, but they aren't required to. Photographers should wear comfortable shoes and arrive with their camera ready to shoot. Please try to arrive by 2:30pm, in time for lighting & gear demos. After checking in, browse Tamron's lenses and Nanlite lighting, available to borrow on location. Action Camera will be available to assist with gear. Prizes will be given away at the end to the participants who get most creative and engaging with Nanlite and Tamron gear (just for fun, slams are not competitions). Explore the space for inspiring portrait locations, take a few test shots and chat with fellow creatives. Introductions start at 3pm. Katy Karns, owner of Glow Studio, is opening her photography studio (a three minute walk from the River City Queen) for participants during the slam and will be offering a tour of her space at 2:40pm. We begin each slam by pairing everyone up. Please be prepared to work with many different models in quick 10 minute sessions. Personal lighting and film photography are welcome but please tread lightly and check in with us before flying a drone. Photography assistants are required to purchase a general ticket.
